The Sanatana Dharma Foundation (SDF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation based in Dallas, Texas, that preserves Bhutanese Hindu heritage and promotes Sanatana Dharma in the Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex. Granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service in August 2008 (EIN 20-8615051), SDF serves an estimated 800 or more Bhutanese refugees in the DFW area through cultural events, financial assistance for newly arrived refugees, resettlement support, and media outreach. The organisation's guiding principle is Paropa Kaarardham Idam Sareeram — the body exists to serve others.[1]
Background
The Lhotshampa (ethnic Nepali) population of southern Bhutan included a significant Hindu community whose religious and cultural identity was targeted during the Bhutanese refugee crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Draconian nationalist policies stripped many ethnic Nepalis of their citizenship and civil rights, followed by systematic intimidation that forced tens of thousands to flee to Nepal and West Bengal. Hindu Bhutanese carried with them religious traditions, festival observances, and cultural practices that risked erosion in the diaspora without institutional support.[2]
The DFW metroplex became home to a growing Bhutanese refugee population following the commencement of third-country resettlement in 2007. SDF was established to ensure that, amid the challenges of resettlement, the community's Hindu heritage would be actively preserved and transmitted to the next generation.
Programmes and Activities
Bhutanese Refugee Assistance Programme
SDF's Bhutanese Refugee Assistance Programme aims to empower refugees in all aspects of resettlement while preserving their unique cultural heritage. Volunteers have provided financial assistance of a short-term nature to newly arrived families, procurement of essential materials such as blankets and clothing, and practical support including driving lessons. The programme reflects SDF's dual commitment to immediate welfare and long-term cultural continuity.[3]
Cultural and Religious Events
SDF organises cultural concerts, meetings, seminars, and religious observances to preserve Hindu traditions within the diaspora. Events have included celebrations of Gita Jayanthi (December 2009) and Rudra Mahotsav (April 2010) at the DFW Hindu Temple. The organisation supports the observance of major Lhotshampa festivals including Dashain and Tihar, which hold particular significance for Hindu Bhutanese in the diaspora as expressions of continuity with their homeland traditions.[4]
Radio Programme
SDF launched "Namaste", a weekly radio programme broadcast every Saturday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM on FM 104.9 in the DFW area. The programme announces local Dharmic events, discusses cultural and religious topics, and serves as a community connector for Bhutanese Hindus spread across the sprawling metroplex.[5]
Leadership and Governance
As of its most recent tax filing (fiscal year 2024), SDF's officers include Kalyan Viswanathan (CEO), Venkateswara Immanneni (CFO), and Gopal Ponangi (Secretary). All officers serve without compensation. The organisation is classified under IRS codes for religion-related and spiritual development organisations, specifically Hindu.[6]
Finances
SDF derives 100 per cent of its revenue from contributions and grants. In fiscal year 2024, the organisation reported revenue of $85,983, expenses of $103,448, and total assets of $75,597 with zero liabilities. The organisation's highest revenue year was 2015, when it received $300,388 in contributions. Financial records show tax returns filed consistently from 2007 to 2024. The organisation's address has been listed at 18240 Midway Road, Apt 1303, Dallas, Texas 75287.[7]
Broader Mission
Beyond its Bhutanese-focused work, SDF promotes research, education, and awareness of Hindu issues more broadly, fostering knowledge and pride in ancient Hindu traditions. The organisation positions itself as a resource for strengthening Hindu communities worldwide, while its local programmes in DFW address the specific cultural preservation needs of the Lhotshampa diaspora.[8]

The second generation of Bhutanese Americans — those born in or primarily raised in the United States — navigate a complex identity terrain shaped by Lhotshampa heritage, Nepali language and culture, the collective memory of refugee experience, and full participation in American society. Their negotiation of these multiple affiliations will determine the long-term character of the Bhutanese diaspora and its relationship to both the country of origin and the adopted homeland.
