Sangay Tsheltrim (born 1982) is a former captain of the Royal Bhutanese Army who became Bhutan's most internationally recognised actor, with roles in Bollywood blockbusters including Radhe (2021) and Jawan (2023). He is also Bhutan's foremost competitive bodybuilder.

Sangay Tsheltrim (born 10 March 1982) is the most internationally recognised Bhutanese actor working today, having transitioned from a career as a captain in the Royal Bhutanese Army to competitive bodybuilding and subsequently to leading roles in both Bhutanese and Hindi cinema. His appearances in major Bollywood productions alongside Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have brought global attention to Bhutan's small but growing film culture, and his journey from the Royal Bodyguard to Bollywood sets is one of the more unusual career trajectories in contemporary South Asian entertainment.
Early Life and Military Career
Tsheltrim grew up in Phuentsholing, a border town in Chhukha District. After completing school in 2001, he joined the Royal Bhutan Army through officer training and rose to the rank of captain, serving in the Royal Bodyguard of Bhutan — the elite unit responsible for the personal protection of the royal family. His military service developed the physical discipline and rigorous training habits that would later underpin his bodybuilding career.
During his service in the Royal Bodyguard, Tsheltrim developed a passion for physical fitness and bodybuilding, inspired in part by the films of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He took voluntary retirement from the military in 2013 to pursue competitive bodybuilding.
Bodybuilding Career
After leaving the army, Tsheltrim competed in bodybuilding at both the national and international level. He scripted history by winning Bhutan's first gold medal at the Asian Bodybuilding Championship — a landmark achievement for a country with a minimal competitive bodybuilding tradition. He was subsequently crowned Mr. Bhutan in 2017, establishing himself as the country's foremost athlete in the sport. His physique attracted attention beyond the bodybuilding world and led directly to his film career.
Acting Career
Bhutanese Film
Tsheltrim made his acting debut in the Bhutanese film Singye (2018), the title meaning "lion" — an apt descriptor for a performer whose imposing physical presence was central to his early roles. The film became a significant domestic success, introducing him to Bhutanese audiences and demonstrating the market for action-oriented Bhutanese cinema featuring local talent.
Bollywood
His Bollywood career began through a chance encounter with Salman Khan on the sets of Dabangg 3 in 2019, from which an hour-long conversation led to his casting in Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai (2021), where he played the role of Lota. The film marked his entry into Hindi cinema and demonstrated that Bhutanese performers could work credibly in the competitive Indian film industry.
His profile rose substantially with his appearance in Jawan (2023), the Shah Rukh Khan-led blockbuster directed by Atlee that became one of Bollywood's highest-grossing films of that year. Tsheltrim played the role of police officer Juju. He has also appeared in Agent (2023) as Khalid and Ruslaan (2024) as Lee, building a body of work across different productions and directors. He has stated that he was offered a role in Pathaan before accepting Jawan.
In 2025, he was announced as part of the cast of Akhanda 2, continuing his presence in large-scale Telugu and Hindi productions. He continues to work in both Bhutanese and Hindi cinema.
Legacy
Sangay Tsheltrim's trajectory — from Royal Bodyguard to Bollywood — is without precedent in Bhutanese public life. His success has brought international visibility to Bhutan and has challenged assumptions about the possibilities available to Bhutanese citizens in creative industries. For younger Bhutanese with ambitions in entertainment or fitness, his career provides a concrete example of what determination and physical discipline can achieve. He has stated that his primary goal in Bollywood is to make Bhutan's king and country proud — a formulation that places national representation at the centre of what is also a personal professional project.
