Kezang Dorji (born 22 October 1989) is a Bhutanese rapper, social activist, and entrepreneur widely regarded as the pioneer of Bhutanese rap music. He was the first Bhutanese solo artist to undertake a national tour and the first to perform in all 20 dzongkhags (districts) of Bhutan. His patriotic lyrics urge youth to vote, serve the nation, and avoid substance abuse.
Kezang Dorji (born 22 October 1989) is a Bhutanese rapper, social activist, and youth icon who is widely credited as the pioneer of rap music in Bhutan. Born in Wooling Village in the eastern district of Samdrup Jongkhar, he grew up in the small town of Dewathang before attending Sherubtse College, the oldest institution of higher education in Bhutan. He describes himself as a "raptivist" — a rapper-activist — and has used his music as a vehicle for patriotic messaging and social change in a country where hip-hop was once virtually unknown.[1]
Named "The Rising Star of Bhutan" by the national newspaper Kuensel in 2016, Kezang has released two studio albums, undertaken two national tours covering every district in the country, and represented Bhutan at international youth summits. Unlike many Western rap artists, his lyrics are overwhelmingly positive and patriotic, urging young Bhutanese to vote, work hard, steer clear of drugs and alcohol, and serve the nation.[2]
Early Life and Education
Kezang began writing and performing rap music at the age of 19 while studying at Sherubtse College in Kanglung. His earliest compositions were in English, but he soon switched to Dzongkha, the national language, recognising that no one was rapping in Dzongkha at the time. This decision proved pivotal: by performing in the language of everyday Bhutanese life, Kezang made hip-hop accessible and relatable to audiences across the country.[3]
At Sherubtse, Kezang was elected President of the student body (FINA President) in 2011 and served until his graduation in 2012. Upon graduating, he received the prestigious Director's Medal for Social Service in recognition of his community work during his university years. His time at Sherubtse also produced his debut release, Sherubtse Rockers Vol#1: Make A Difference (2011), the first Bhutanese rap album.[4]
The Kuzuzangpo Tours
In 2016, Kezang made history as the first Bhutanese solo artist to undertake a national concert tour. The Kuzuzangpo Tour — named after the Dzongkha greeting meaning "hello" or "blessings" — ran from 17 September to 22 October 2016, covering nine districts and twelve venues. The tour was a grassroots affair: Kezang travelled to remote towns and villages, performing in school halls, open fields, and community centres, often to audiences for whom a live music concert was a novel experience.[5]
In 2019, Kezang undertook The Kuzuzangpo Tour 2, an even more ambitious project that covered all 20 dzongkhags of Bhutan. With this second tour, he became the first Bhutanese artist to perform in every district of the country, reaching communities in some of the most remote corners of the Himalayan kingdom. Both tours combined live performance with social messaging, as Kezang used each stop to engage with local youth on issues including civic participation, substance abuse, and national pride.[6]
Discography
Kezang's recorded output includes Sherubtse Rockers Vol#1: Make A Difference (2011); The Kuzuzangpo Album (2017), a compilation of sixteen songs released between 2011 and 2017; and Kuzuzangpo 2 (2019), his second full album, which was released on digital platforms and later as a physical album on a USB drive in 2021. His songs blend Dzongkha and English lyrics over beats that draw on both international hip-hop production and Bhutanese musical sensibility.[7]
International Recognition and Social Work
In May 2017, Kezang represented Bhutan at the LEAD Alliance youth summit in Mongolia, a programme organised by World Learning, where he delivered a talk entitled "The Power of Music." He has been recognised as a World Learning LEAD Alliance fellow and has spoken at various international forums about the role of music in social development. His approach — using locally rooted art to address social challenges — has drawn attention as a model for youth engagement in small developing nations.[8]
Beyond music, Kezang has pursued work in hospitality and entrepreneurship. He has been recognised by CEO Insights Asia as a visionary leader in Bhutan's hospitality landscape. His career trajectory — from a village in eastern Bhutan to national celebrity and international recognition — exemplifies the possibilities open to Bhutanese youth in an era of rapid modernisation.
