Despite Bhutan's historically low FIFA ranking, individual Bhutanese players — most notably Chencho Gyeltshen, the country's all-time leading goalscorer — have pursued professional careers across Asia, raising the sport's profile domestically and inspiring a new generation of players.

Football has grown rapidly in Bhutan since the country joined FIFA in 2000 and the national team began competing in international fixtures. Whilst the national team has historically occupied the lower reaches of the FIFA world rankings, a small cohort of individual Bhutanese players has pursued professional careers abroad — most prominently in India, Thailand, and Indonesia — demonstrating that Bhutanese footballers can compete at a higher level given the opportunity. The most celebrated of these is Chencho Gyeltshen, who has become the country's first fully professional international footballer and its all-time leading goalscorer.

Chencho Gyeltshen

Chencho Gyeltshen (born 10 May 1996, Shapa Gewog, Paro District) is the most decorated Bhutanese footballer and the central figure in the sport's development in the country. Nicknamed CG7 and sometimes referred to in Bhutanese media as the "Bhutanese Ronaldo" for his playing style, he became Bhutan's first fully professional footballer in 2015 when he signed with Thai club Surin City — making history by becoming the first Bhutanese to play professionally abroad.

His early international career produced a landmark moment for Bhutanese football: in 2015, he scored a brace against Sri Lanka in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, helping Bhutan to its first-ever World Cup Qualifier victory. The match became one of the defining sporting events in the country's recent history.

Gyeltshen's club career has taken him across several Asian football leagues:

  • Thailand: Surin City (2015, 11 appearances, 9 goals); Satun United
  • India: Minerva Punjab FC (where he won the 2017–2018 I-League title); Punjab FC; Kerala Blasters; Neroca FC; Bengaluru FC
  • Indonesia: Sriwijaya FC Palembang (from 2023; first Bhutanese to play in the Indonesian league)
  • Nepal: Lalitpur City FC (from February 2025)
  • Bhutan: Paro FC

As of 2025, Gyeltshen remains Bhutan's all-time international top scorer, with 13 goals in 46 international appearances. His career has spanned a decade of professional football across four national leagues, and he continues to add to his record.

The Growing Sport

Football's popularity has grown significantly in Bhutan over the past two decades. The Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) oversees domestic league competition, youth development programmes, and the national teams at senior and junior levels. Gyeltshen's international career has provided a visible example of what Bhutanese footballers can achieve in professional leagues, and has been credited with inspiring greater youth participation in the sport.

The Bhutanese Premier League and lower domestic divisions have also provided a platform for other Bhutanese players to develop, even if the pathway to professional contracts abroad remains narrow. The BFF's youth development work is focused on expanding the pipeline of players with the technical quality to attract professional attention outside Bhutan.

Significance

Chencho Gyeltshen's career represents a proof of concept for Bhutanese football: that a player from one of the world's smallest and least-resourced football nations can sustain a professional career across multiple competitive leagues over more than a decade. His success has given the sport legitimacy and aspiration within Bhutan, and his profile as a national figure — featuring in media coverage, endorsements, and public events — has elevated football's standing relative to the country's traditional sporting culture centred on archery.
