The Bhutan Media Foundation (BMF) is a civil-society organisation established by Royal Charter in 2010 to strengthen Bhutan’s media. It supports independent journalism through training, scholarships, media-literacy work and policy advocacy, in service of the country’s young democracy.

The Bhutan Media Foundation (BMF) is a civil-society organisation based in Thimphu that works to foster a strong, responsible and independent media sector in Bhutan. It was established by Royal Charter on 21 February 2010, with seed funding from His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, at a time when the country's media was adjusting to the demands of the new democratic era.[1]

Mandate

The Foundation's stated purpose is to strengthen the media so that journalists may carry out their duties "without fear and favour" in the interest of democracy. It promotes professionalism and the sustainability of news organisations, supports press freedom and policy advocacy, and works on media literacy among the public.[2]

Activities

The BMF runs training programmes for journalists on subjects such as investigative reporting, climate-change journalism and gender-sensitive coverage, and offers scholarships and capacity-building support to newspapers, broadcasters, journalists' associations and press clubs. As a CSO it occupies a distinctive position between the state and the private press in a small media market where commercial sustainability is a persistent challenge.[2]
