Bhutan maintains a parallel system of traditional medicine (Sowa Rigpa or gso-ba rig-pa) alongside modern Western medicine. Traditional medicine hospitals operate in every district, offering herbal treatments, spiritual healing, and indigenous therapies.
Overview
Bhutan is one of the few countries in the world that maintains a fully integrated parallel system of traditional and modern medicine within its public healthcare system. Traditional medicine, known as Sowa Rigpa[1] (gso-ba rig-pa, "science of healing"), is rooted in Tibetan medical traditions and is offered free of charge alongside Western medicine.
Traditional Medicine Hospitals
The National Traditional Medicine Hospital in Thimphu serves as the main facility, with traditional medicine units in district hospitals across the country. Practitioners diagnose through pulse reading, urine analysis, and patient interview, and prescribe herbal medicines compounded on-site from Bhutanese medicinal plants.[2]
Medicinal Plants
Bhutan's rich biodiversity provides a vast pharmacopoeia. Traditional Bhutanese medicines use hundreds of plant species collected from Himalayan forests, alpine meadows, and cultivated gardens. The Manufacturing Unit at the National Traditional Medicine Hospital produces over 100 traditional formulations.
Integration
Bhutan's approach of integrating traditional and modern medicine is studied internationally as a model. Patients can choose either system, and referrals between the two are common. The Constitution recognizes the importance of preserving traditional medicine as part of Bhutanese cultural heritage.
