History
Bhutanese refugee resettlement in Louisville began in 2008, with a few families arriving as early as June. As more families arrived in 2009, community members recognized the need for an organization that could advocate for people with language barriers and ensure the preservation of collective values and cultural heritage. A community welcome program organized in April or May 2009 produced encouragement to begin formal incorporation. By August 2009, BSK was registered with the state of Kentucky.
In September 2010, the organization held elections across all Bhutanese settlement areas in Kentucky, forming its first executive board of twenty-one members. BSK received its IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt designation in January 2017.[1]
