Bhutan Archery Federation

The Bhutan Archery Federation (BAF) is the national governing body for archery in Bhutan. Founded in 1971 in Thimphu, it is the oldest sports federation in the country and was the first national sports body to be created after Bhutan's emergence from self-imposed isolation and its admission to the United Nations the following year. Archery (datse) was designated the national sport of Bhutan in the same year.^[1]

BAF promotes both traditional Bhutanese archery — shot with bamboo bows over distances of up to 145 metres — and the international recurve and compound disciplines codified by World Archery. It is affiliated with the Bhutan Olympic Committee, which was created on 23 November 1983 with the Fourth King as its President, and Bhutanese archers have competed at every Summer Olympic Games since the Los Angeles 1984 edition.^[2]

The federation's secretariat is at Langjophaka in Thimphu. In 2004 BAF was awarded a Prince Claus Award by the Netherlands-based Prince Claus Fund "for sustaining and developing archery as a dynamic expression of local cultural values".^[1]

History and Mandate

Until 2010 BAF was the single body responsible for both traditional Bhutanese archery and the international codes. From that year onwards, traditional datse formats — including the use of bamboo bows, two distant targets, and the team songs and dances that accompany the sport — passed under the oversight of the Bhutan Indigenous Games and Sports Association (BIGSA), while BAF retained responsibility for international-style archery and Olympic representation. In practice the two bodies cooperate closely and many BAF members are also active in BIGSA tournaments.^[3]

BAF's stated mandate is to set uniform rules for archery in Bhutan, to provide training facilities and coaches, to organise national tournaments, and to represent the country in international competition. It works through volunteer office-bearers and provincial coordinators rather than salaried staff, an arrangement that has limited its administrative capacity but has also kept it close to the village-level archery clubs that are the backbone of the sport.^[2]

Tournaments

BAF organises a calendar of compound and recurve tournaments at Changlimithang National Archery Stadium in Thimphu and at district grounds. The most prominent traditional events — the Yangphel Open Archery Tournament and the Coronation Day national tournament — are run with logistical support from BAF and BIGSA. In June 2025 the Bhutan Olympic Committee, working with BAF, launched the first Bhutan National Archery Championship at Changlimithang, framed as an annual ranking competition for the international codes.^[4]

International Affiliation and Olympic Record

BAF is a member of World Archery (formerly FITA) within the Asia region, and represents Bhutan at the Asian Archery Federation. Bhutan has entered archers in every Summer Olympic Games since 1984, with the team typically consisting of one or two recurve archers selected through national trials. Bhutan has not yet won an Olympic medal in archery; the country's best Olympic results in the sport have been first-round eliminations in the women's individual recurve event.^[1]

The federation also sends athletes to the South Asian Games, the Asian Games and World Archery World Cup events. Funding for international travel comes through the Bhutan Olympic Committee and through corporate sponsorship arranged by BAF, with the small Bhutanese contingent typically supported by Olympic Solidarity grants.^[2]
