The administrative center of Wangdue Phodrang district, known locally as Bajo, situated at approximately 1,300 m elevation at the confluence of the Tang Chhu and Punatsangchhu rivers. The town is dominated by the historic Wangdue Phodrang Dzong (founded 1638), which tragically suffered a devastating fire in 2012 and is being painstakingly reconstructed in traditional style. Bajo functions as a commercial crossroads connecting routes to Punakha, Trongsa, the Phobjikha Valley, and southern Bhutan, with a growing commercial district and the Under Residence agricultural market.
