The administrative capital of Trongsa district at approximately 2,200 m elevation, strategically located at the geographic center of Bhutan where the east-west highway crosses the Black Mountains. The town is dominated by the magnificent Trongsa Dzong, the largest in Bhutan and ancestral seat of the Wangchuck dynasty, along with the Ta Dzong (watchtower) converted into the Royal Heritage Museum in 2008. Trongsa has historically controlled all east-west movement through the kingdom and remains a key transit point for travelers between western and eastern Bhutan.
