The largest dzong in eastern Bhutan, commanding a spur overlooking the Drangme Chhu (Manas River) gorge at an elevation of approximately 1,100 meters. Built in 1659 by Mingyur Tenpa, the third Desi of Bhutan, it served as the seat of power for the Trongsa Penlop's deputy governing the eastern provinces. Trashigang Dzong now houses the district administration and monastic body, and the surrounding district of Trashigang is the most populous in eastern Bhutan and home to Sherubtse College, the country's oldest higher education institution.
