The capital and largest city of Bhutan with an estimated population exceeding 115,000, situated at 2,334 m elevation in the Wang Chhu river valley. A Class A Thromde governed by an elected Thrompon (mayor), it houses Tashichho Dzong (seat of government), the Supreme Court, and the National Assembly, accounting for a significant share of Bhutan's GDP through government services, tourism, and a growing IT sector. Unique among world capitals, Thimphu has no traffic lights, using traffic police to manage its increasingly congested streets.
