An important Drukpa Kagyu monastery and Buddhist university perched on a cliff north of Thimphu at approximately 2,800 meters. Founded in the 13th century by Lama Gyalwa Lhanampa and later expanded by the Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and the renowned "Divine Madman" Drukpa Kunley, Tango houses the Tango Buddhist University which trains monks in Buddhist philosophy, metaphysics, and astrology in a traditional three-year retreat program. The monastery is reached by a 45-minute uphill walk through forest and is one of the most important centers of monastic learning in Bhutan.
