A prestigious monastic university (shedra) at Tango Monastery, approximately 14 kilometres north of Thimphu, offering advanced Buddhist studies including philosophy, logic, metaphysics, and meditation practice. Founded by the "Divine Madman" Drukpa Kunley in the 15th century and later expanded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the present educational programme was formalized as a Buddhist university for monks pursuing higher philosophical study. The monastery sits at approximately 2,800 meters and is accessible only by a 45-minute uphill hike, maintaining the contemplative isolation valued in monastic education.
