A sacred cliff hermitage in the remote northern reaches of Lhuentse district, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in eastern Bhutan. Associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who is believed to have meditated here in the 8th century, Singye Dzong is accessible only by a strenuous multi-day trek through alpine terrain. The hermitage is perched on a dramatic cliff face and contains meditation caves and sacred relics. The site is particularly revered because Guru Rinpoche is said to have departed from here riding a flying tigress.
