Samtse Town

The capital town of Samtse dzongkhag, situated in the subtropical lowlands of southwestern Bhutan at approximately 400 meters elevation near the Indian border. Samtse is Bhutan's most populous district and the town serves as its commercial and administrative hub, with a bustling market area, government offices, schools, and healthcare facilities. The town has a distinctly South Asian character compared to Bhutan's highland towns, with a warm tropical climate and a diverse population of Lhotshampa, Ngalop, and other communities. Cross-border trade with India's Jalpaiguri district is a major economic driver.
