The administrative center of Samtse District in Bhutan's southwestern corner, bordering the Indian states of West Bengal and Sikkim. Samtse district is one of the most culturally diverse in Bhutan, home to Lhotshampa (southern Bhutanese of Nepali origin), Toto, and other communities. The dzong houses the district administration overseeing fifteen gewogs in a region known for mandarin orange and areca nut cultivation, cardamom production, and cross-border trade with India through several border points.
