Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary

The world's only protected area officially established to protect the habitat of the migoi (Bhutanese yeti), this 740 km² sanctuary in eastern Bhutan shelters temperate broadleaf forests and alpine meadows between 1,700 m and 4,500 m. Home to the semi-nomadic Brokpa people who maintain a distinct culture, language, and yak-herding lifestyle, the sanctuary also protects red pandas, Himalayan black bears, barking deer, and over 180 bird species. The Merak-Sakteng cultural trek passes through its territory.
