Founded under the patronage of Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck to preserve Bhutan's 13 traditional arts (Zorig Chusum), with a focus on textile weaving — one of the most revered art forms in Bhutanese culture. The academy houses a museum with over 100 rare and antique textiles including kushuthara, aikapur, and other intricate weave patterns, some dating back several hundred years. It offers training programs for young weavers to master complex techniques such as supplementary warp pattern weaving unique to Bhutan.
