The administrative and monastic fortress of Pema Gatshel district, constructed in the 1990s when the district was established as a separate dzongkhag. Though one of the newest dzongs in Bhutan, it was built following traditional Bhutanese architectural principles with rammed earth walls, wooden frameworks, and ornate Buddhist artwork. The dzong houses both the district administration and a small monastic body, and serves as the venue for the annual Pema Gatshel Tshechu, featuring sacred masked dances.
