Housed in a traditional Bhutanese-style building, the National Library preserves the largest collection of Dzongkha and Tibetan-script texts in the country, including ancient Buddhist manuscripts, xylographic prints, and historical documents dating back several centuries. The collection numbers in the tens of thousands of volumes covering Buddhist philosophy, Bhutanese law, astrology, and medicine. The institution also serves as the national archives, maintaining government records and historical photographs, and is open to researchers and the public.
