The administrative capital of Mongar district and a key commercial hub for eastern Bhutan, situated at approximately 1,600 m elevation in a bowl-shaped valley. Mongar is home to the Eastern Regional Referral Hospital, making it the healthcare center for eastern Bhutan, and features one of the few dzongs built in the 20th century (1930). The town serves as an important transit point on the east-west highway connecting Bumthang to Trashigang, with a growing market area and educational institutions.
