One of the most remote healthcare facilities in the world, the Lunana Basic Health Unit serves the highland community of Lunana Gewog in Gasa Dzongkhag at over 4,200 meters elevation. Lunana is accessible only by an eight to ten day trek from the nearest road and is home to approximately 700 people who practice yak herding and high-altitude farming. The BHU provides basic primary care, emergency treatment, and maternal health services in conditions of extreme isolation. Health workers posted here serve multi-year rotations, and medical supplies must be carried in by pack animals during the brief summer months when trails are passable.
