The newest and westernmost protected area in Bhutan, covering 609 km² in Haa district along the border with Tibet (China), with elevations from 2,000 m to over 5,000 m. Named after King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, it was carved from the western portion of Jigme Dorji National Park to strengthen protection of alpine meadows and temperate forests. The reserve harbors snow leopards, musk deer, blue sheep, and Himalayan serow, and serves as a watershed for the Haa and Paro valleys.
