The administrative capital of Bumthang district, often called the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, situated at 2,580 m elevation in the Chhoekhor Valley. Jakar (meaning "white bird") is named after a legend that a white bird chose the site for Jakar Dzong, which overlooks the town from a ridge above. The town is the gateway to Bumthang's four sacred valleys containing some of Bhutan's oldest and most revered temples, including Jambay Lhakhang (7th century) and Kurjey Lhakhang. Jakar is also known for its cottage industries producing honey, cheese, and bumthang (buckwheat noodles).
