Originally built in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal as a Drukpa Kagyu monastery, Wangchulo Dzong serves as the administrative headquarters of Haa District in one of Bhutan's most secluded valleys near the Tibetan and Sikkimese borders. The dzong was historically a military outpost due to Haa's strategic frontier location and today houses the Haa district administration. The surrounding Haa Valley, opened to tourism only in 2002, is known for its pristine environment, traditional villages, and the annual Haa Summer Festival promoting nomadic Bhutanese culture.
