Gelephu Thromde

A southern border town in Sarpang district with a population of approximately 10,000, adjacent to the Indian state of Assam at 300 m elevation. In December 2023, King Jigme Khesar designated a 1,000 sq km area centered on Gelephu as the Gelephu Mindfulness City, a Special Administrative Region envisioned as an international economic hub with its own governance framework, tax structure, and international airport. The town is home to the Central Regional Referral Hospital and its subtropical climate makes it strategically suited for large-scale development.
