A new international airport under construction as a cornerstone of the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a 1,000 sq km Special Administrative Region announced by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in December 2023. Designed to serve as Bhutan's second international gateway complementing Paro, it will feature a runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft. The GMC master plan by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) aims to attract foreign investment, tech industries, and sustainable tourism while preserving Bhutan's Gross National Happiness philosophy.
