The ancestral seat of the Wangchuck royal family in the Kurtoe gewog of Lhuentse district, a site of profound historical significance for the Bhutanese monarchy. Dungkar Dzong is where the ancestors of the royal dynasty, tracing their lineage through the great treasure-revealer Pema Lingpa, established their base of power before Ugyen Wangchuck was crowned as the first King of Bhutan in 1907. Though smaller and less ornate than the main district dzong, Dungkar Dzong holds deep symbolic importance.
