One of the most important Buddhist stupas in eastern Bhutan, modeled after the great Boudhanath Stupa in Nepal. Built in 1740 by Lama Ngawang Loday to subdue a local demoness, Chorten Kora stands in a broad river valley near Trashi Yangtse town and is the focal point of two major annual festivals held during the first and third months of the lunar calendar. During the Dakpa Kora and the Drukpa Kora, thousands of pilgrims from eastern Bhutan and the Tawang region of Arunachal Pradesh circumambulate the stupa. The white-domed structure is surrounded by 108 smaller chortens and prayer wheels.
