One of the oldest temples in the Thimphu Valley, perched on a ridge overlooking the city. Founded in the 12th century by Lama Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, who brought the Drukpa Kagyu lineage from Tibet to Bhutan, the temple is dedicated to Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva of compassion in an eleven-headed form. Changangkha is one of Thimphu's most popular pilgrimage sites where Bhutanese families traditionally bring newborn babies to receive blessings and auspicious names from the resident lama.
