A 1,520 km² protected area in the northeastern corner of Bhutan spanning Trashi Yangtse and Lhuentse districts, with elevations from 1,500 m to 6,000 m. The sanctuary's Bumdeling Valley is one of only two wintering sites in Bhutan for the endangered black-necked crane, hosting around 150 cranes annually from November to March. It also protects Bengal tigers, red pandas, Himalayan black bears, and over 150 bird species, with the ancient Rigsum Goenpa temple complex situated within its boundaries.
