A two-stage hydroelectric project on the Basochhu river in Wangdue Phodrang district with a combined installed capacity of 64 MW (upper stage 24 MW, lower stage 40 MW). Built with Austrian government development assistance, it was the first significant hydropower project in Bhutan developed without Indian bilateral funding. Commissioned in 2001-2004, Basochhu generates approximately 280 GWh annually and primarily serves domestic electricity consumption rather than export, contributing to Bhutan's goal of universal electrification.
