Kinzang Lhamo (born 1998) is a Bhutanese marathon runner who represented Bhutan at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She became a global sensation after finishing the women's marathon last but drawing massive crowd support and a standing ovation, earning the nickname "Pied Piper of Bhutan" from international media.

Background

Kinzang Lhamo was born in 1998 in Bhutan.[5] She is a long-distance and marathon runner who has represented Bhutan in international athletics competitions.

2024 Paris Olympics

Lhamo represented Bhutan at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the women's marathon. Although she finished in last place, her determination and joy throughout the race captured the hearts of spectators and viewers worldwide. Enormous crowds lined the final kilometers of the course to cheer her on, and she received a standing ovation[2] as she crossed the finish line.

International media dubbed her the "Pied Piper of Bhutan" for the way spectators gathered and followed her along the route. Her performance became one of the most celebrated human-interest stories of the Paris Games, embodying the Olympic spirit that participation and perseverance matter as much as winning.

Significance

Kinzang Lhamo's Paris Olympics moment brought global attention to Bhutan and to the spirit of small-nation athletes who compete not for medals but for the honor of representing their country. Her story resonated particularly because Bhutan — a nation of fewer than 800,000 people with minimal athletics infrastructure — continues to send athletes to the world's biggest stage. She represents Bhutan's growing presence in international athletics beyond its traditional strength in archery.
