Young Bhutanese environmental activists are leading grassroots efforts on waste management, wildlife conservation, and climate awareness. Their work builds on Bhutan's constitutional commitment to environmental preservation.

Overview

Environmental conservation is one of the four pillars of Gross National Happiness, and Bhutan's conservation record is backed by dedicated organisations and individuals.[1]

Key Organisations

Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN)

Founded in 1986 by Dasho Paljor J. Dorji under royal patronage, RSPN is Bhutan's only environmental NGO. It has won a US$350,000 international award for its conservation work in fields including nature conservation, environmental education, and endangered species research.[2]

Bhutan Ecological Society

Led by Executive Director Nawang Norbu, the society connects science, business, and policy to advance conservation goals.[1]

Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation

Established in 1991 as the world's first environmental trust fund, a collaborative venture between the Royal Government, UNDP, and WWF.[1]

Individual Activists

Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk, a filmmaker and actor, cycled across Bhutan from Pemagatshel to Thimphu to raise awareness about climate change and environmental protection.[3]
