An overview of major soccer and volleyball tournaments organised by the Bhutanese diaspora across the United States, including the Bhutanese American Premier Cup, BSK Champions Cup, Intra Cup, and Interstate Bhutanese Soccer Championship.
Bhutanese community sports leagues encompass a growing network of soccer and volleyball tournaments organised by Bhutanese diaspora organisations across the United States. Since the large-scale resettlement of over 90,000 Bhutanese refugees beginning in 2007, community sports have become a vital mechanism for maintaining cultural identity, building inter-state connections, and fostering youth engagement. Major tournaments such as the Bhutanese American Premier Cup (BAPC), BSK Champions Cup, Intra Cup volleyball tournament, and the Interstate Bhutanese Soccer Championship draw teams from dozens of states and attract thousands of spectators annually.[1]
These events function as more than athletic competitions. They serve as cultural festivals where Bhutanese families reconnect across state lines, enjoy traditional food, participate in cultural performances, and strengthen the social fabric of a community dispersed across more than 20 states. For younger generations born in the United States or resettled at a young age, sports tournaments offer a tangible connection to Bhutanese and Nepali-speaking community identity.[2]

Bhutanese American Premier Cup (BAPC)
The Bhutanese American Premier Cup is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious sporting events within the Bhutanese diaspora in the United States. Organised by RajaBabu FC based in Akron, Ohio, the BAPC is an annual soccer tournament that brings together top-tier teams from across the country. The tournament is open to Bhutanese-American soccer teams from various states, providing an opportunity for athletes of all skill levels to compete in a professionally organised event.[1]
Beyond the pitch, the BAPC operates as a cultural gathering. Traditional Bhutanese food stalls, cultural performances, and community networking opportunities accompany the matches. For many families, the annual tournament serves as a reunion, with relatives travelling from states as distant as Texas, Georgia, and Minnesota to attend. Teams typically register through the official BAPC website at bapc.us, with registration opening several months before the tournament date. Entry fees and team roster requirements are published on the site each season.[1]
BSK Champions Cup
The BSK Champions Cup is organised by the Bhutanese Society of Kentucky (BSK) and was inaugurated in 2025 in Louisville, Kentucky. The inaugural edition drew eight interstate teams that competed over three days at the LouCity and Racing Louisville practice fields off River Road. The winning team received a grand prize of US$10,000, making it one of the highest-value prizes in Bhutanese diaspora sports. Following the success of the inaugural event, tournament organisers announced plans to host the BSK Champions Cup biennially in Louisville.[3]
The BSK Champions Cup concluded on 4 August 2025, with Louisville Rising Star and Beldangi 1 crowned as victors in their respective categories. The Bhutanese Society of Kentucky, based in Louisville, has been instrumental in community-building initiatives for the city's substantial Bhutanese population. Interested teams can contact the BSK through their official Facebook page for future tournament registration details.[4]
Interstate Bhutanese Soccer Championship
The Interstate Bhutanese Soccer Championship is one of the longest-running diaspora sporting events, having been held annually since the early 2010s. The championship rotates between host cities and has grown substantially over the years. The 2014 edition saw 40 Bhutanese-American soccer teams from 23 different states competing, with the Atlanta, Georgia team defeating Columbus, Ohio 4–1 in the final to claim the championship trophy and a cash prize of US$2,001. Columbus received US$1,501 as runners-up.[5]
By the 11th edition in 2024, the tournament had firmly established itself as a marquee event on the Bhutanese diaspora calendar. The championship typically spans a weekend, with group-stage matches leading to knockout rounds. Teams represent their home cities and states, generating strong local pride and interstate rivalries that help maintain community bonds across vast geographical distances.[6]
Intra Cup Volleyball Tournament
The Intra Cup is a major volleyball tournament that draws teams from across the Bhutanese and Nepali-speaking diaspora. The 2nd Intra-Cup 2022, held at the Big Run Athletic Complex in Columbus, Ohio, attracted 29 teams from nine states: New York, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, Texas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The tournament featured both men's and women's divisions, with 21 men's teams and 8 women's teams competing.[2]
The Bhutanese Youth Sports Club from Minnesota won the women's finals and received a cash prize of US$3,500, whilst The Friendship Club from Ohio secured second place with a US$2,500 prize. The volleyball festival has been described as the biggest event of its kind among Nepali-speaking communities in the United States, particularly on the east coast, where volleyball has deep cultural roots as a popular community sport.[2]

Cultural and Community Significance
Sports tournaments serve multiple functions within the Bhutanese diaspora beyond athletic competition. They are among the few occasions when community members dispersed across the country come together in large numbers, providing opportunities for cultural exchange, matchmaking, political organising, and community fundraising. Food vendors at tournaments serve traditional dishes such as momo, sel roti, and gundruk, whilst cultural programmes may include Nepali folk music and dance performances.[1]
Youth engagement is a particularly important dimension. Many young Bhutanese Americans who were resettled as children or born in the United States find in these tournaments a space to connect with their cultural heritage whilst participating in familiar American sporting formats. Several tournaments have expanded to include youth divisions, ensuring that the next generation maintains the community connections forged through sports. Community organisations such as the Bhutanese Youth Sports Organisation of Columbus have emerged specifically to organise and promote athletic programmes for young people.[3]
