Sonam Topgye Dorji was a prominent Bhutanese statesman and member of the Dorji family who served in various governmental roles during the modernization era under the Third King.

Overview

Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye served as Chief Justice of the High Court of Bhutan from 1991 to 2009 and as the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 2010 to 2014, when the Supreme Court was established as a separate institution under the 2008 Constitution.[1]

Career

Under his inaugural leadership of the Supreme Court, emphasis was placed on judicial training programmes to professionalise the bench, aligning with democratisation efforts that required adapting traditional dispute resolution to modern constitutional standards.[1]
