D.N. Dhungyel (born 1966) is a Bhutanese politician serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade since January 2024. A member of the People's Democratic Party representing the Phuentshogpelri-Samtse constituency, he previously served as Minister for Information and Communications (2013-2018).
Early Life and Education
D.N. Dhungyel was born in 1966. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Sherubtse College, Bhutan's oldest institution of higher education, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Institute of Management Studies and Research in India.
Political Career
Dhungyel is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and represents the Phuentshogpelri-Samtse constituency in the National Assembly of Bhutan.
Minister for Information[2] and Communications (2013-2018)
During the PDP's first term in government under Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Dhungyel served as Minister for Information and Communications from 2013 to 2018, overseeing Bhutan's telecommunications and media sectors during a period of rapid digital growth.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (2024-present)
Following the PDP's return to power in the 2024 elections, Dhungyel was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade. His Majesty the King conferred the Dakyen (official scarf of ministerial rank) on January 28, 2024.
In his current role, he oversees Bhutan's diplomatic relations, including the critical relationships with India and China, and represents Bhutan at international forums. He attended the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi shortly after his appointment, signaling the priority placed on the India-Bhutan partnership.[4]
